Smoothing wrinkles with Botox
short for botulinumtoxin A
Botox smoothes crow's feet and can make frown lines on the forehead disappear.
Among other things, botulinumtoxin A is used in the case of children with a squint to weaken an overactive muscle. It is also used to release cramps and treat tremors. In cosmetic surgery, Botox is administered to weaken the muscles whose hyperactivity has caused the creases in the skin. Another application is in the treatment of patients with excessive perspiration in the armpits. Botox has also achieved considerable importance in the treatment of migraine, where it has proved very successful in many cases.
Uncomplicated application
For the patient, the administration of Botox is uncomplicated. The effect of botulinumtoxin A is to block the receptor between the nerve and the muscle and thus weaken the signal to the muscle. The agent is a synthetically prepared bacterial toxin that causes paralysis of the muscles. A fine needle is used to inject a precisely calculated amount of the agent into the muscles at several points. As the dose administered can be calculated accurately, and the concentrations are very low, there are hardly any side-effects. Fears of finishing up with an expressionless mask face are unfounded. The muscles can be moved at will; it is merely the feeling of tension that disappears.
Pleasant feel
The visible effect of Botox can be seen in the area of the forehead, where it can eliminate the frown lines and smooth the crow's feet. In addition, the loosening of the muscles is a pleasant sensation for the patient. The relatively short-term effect of the treatment further reduces the residual risk, but it also makes a follow-on treatment necessary after about four to six months. After a few treatments, the effect of the Botox is prolonged more and more.
Dr. Hasenöhrl has several years' experience throughout Austria as an instructor in the use of botulinumtoxin A and he holds regular workshops in Innsbruck and Vienna.
